Based on the National Judge Model, NJAC’s Youth Court utilizes an adult judge with youth volunteers as jury members that hear cases for first time youth offenders that have admitted guilt to minor offenses.  Currently, the Adult Judge model is utilized; plans are underway to also implement the Youth Judge Model.  This restorative justice program, aimed at educating young people about careers in the justice field, as well as reducing future criminal activity, results in the jury determining the sentence for their peers.  Sentences commonly include community service, jury duty, restitution and apologies.  Additional sentencing options often include counseling, educational workshops on substance abuse or safe driving, essay writing, victim-awareness classes, curfew, drug testing, school attendance, and peer discussion groups.
